The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has urged Corps Members to uphold the core values of the Scheme as they commence their service year in Rivers State.
Addressing the 2025 Batch ‘C’ Corps Members currently undergoing orientation, the DG emphasized the need for patriotism and adherence to principles such as integrity, transparency, efficiency, and commitment. He encouraged them to cultivate team spirit and see themselves as “one indivisible family united for national development.”
Earlier, the NYSC Rivers State Coordinator, Mr. Moses Oleghe, briefed the DG on activities in camp and reported that the 2,586 Corps Members had shown high levels of discipline, patriotism, and dedication since the commencement of the orientation exercise.
During a courtesy visit to the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Brigadier General Nafiu commended the State Government for its continuous support to the Scheme. He highlighted the provision of mobility support, monthly allowances to Corps Members, and plans to upgrade infrastructure at the Nonwa-Gbam Orientation Camp.
Nafiu also appealed for the relocation of the NYSC State Secretariat to a more serene environment within the capital city. He disclosed that 8,349 Corps Members of Rivers origin comprising 3,374 males and 4,975 females—were currently serving in different states across the country. He added that the Scheme projects to mobilise 650,000 Corps Members next year, noted the need for expanded hostel facilities to accommodate the expected increase.
Governor Fubara, in his response, said his administration had already improved facilities at the Orientation Camp upon assumption of office. He affirmed that Rivers State remained a preferred location for Corps Members due to its hospitable environment and pledged continued support to both the NYSC State Secretariat and the South-South Area Office 2, located in Port Harcourt.
