NYSC partners NHIA to enhance Corps members’ healthcare services

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring Corps Members receive quality healthcare services throughout their service year.

He made this known during his courtesy visit to the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

General Nafiu emphasized that Corps Members face various risks and health hazards during their national service, making it imperative to provide a comprehensive healthcare package. He described health insurance as a vital component of NYSC’s welfare programme and stressed the need for a stronger collaboration between NYSC and NHIA to enhance medical services for Corps Members.

“Corps Members’ welfare and health are paramount to us at NYSC. We want to strengthen our existing relationship with NHIA for the benefit of our Corps Members. This visit is to familiarize myself with NHIA’s leadership and fine-tune the MoU between both organizations,” General Nafiu stated.

He expressed gratitude to the NHIA for its support and assured that his administration would work closely with the agency to improve access to healthcare for Corps Members across the country.

In his response, NHIA’s DG, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, congratulated General Nafiu on his appointment and lauded his dedication to Corps Members’ welfare. He reiterated NHIA’s readiness to sustain and enhance its partnership with NYSC, ensuring seamless healthcare delivery.

“We are committed to strengthening our collaboration with NYSC to ensure that Corps Members have uninterrupted access to quality healthcare. Our compliance and enforcement team is currently reviewing NHIA guidelines and accrediting healthcare providers to improve service delivery,” Dr. Ohiri said.

He further assured that NHIA would address any challenges identified in the existing scheme, adding that a joint committee between NYSC and NHIA would assess critical areas for improvement to enhance the healthcare experience for Corps Members.

This renewed partnership signaled a positive step towards a more robust and effective healthcare system for Corps Members nationwide.
