The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to the Kano State Government to urgently address the inadequate water supply at its permanent Orientation Camp in Karaye, described the situation as a threat to smooth camp operations and corps members’ wellbeing.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House, Kano. He noted that insufficient water supply poses significant operational challenges and potential health risks to the thousands of corps members who pass through the camp annually.
General Nafiu also requested the state government’s support for the expansion of the camp’s multi-purpose hall, which he said is currently too small to conveniently host orientation lectures and other indoor activities.
The DG further called for the constitution of the NYSC State Governing Board and Local Government Committees in Kano, in line with the NYSC Act, to enhance the administration of the scheme.
He disclosed that more than 12,000 corps members are currently serving across Kano’s 44 local government areas, with 75% deployed to public schools as teachers. He added that the state is also benefitting from the services of 102 doctors, 79 pharmacists, and 90 nurses posted to public healthcare facilities.
General Nafiu commended the Kano State Government for its continuous support to the scheme, including the augmentation of corps members’ feeding on camp, renovation of hostels, assistance in the burial of deceased corps members, and the recent overhaul of the utility vehicle at the NYSC State Secretariat.
Responding, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation for the contributions of corps members to the socio-economic development of the state. He pledged that Kano was ready to accept more corps members and ensure their safety.
The governor assured that a team of experts would be dispatched to assess the required upgrades at the Karaye Orientation Camp, with renovation to commence as soon as possible.
