Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced a tough stance against kidnapping in the state, declaring that anyone convicted of the crime will face the death penalty by hanging.
Governor Okpebholo made the declaration during an interactive session with stakeholders and members of the Arewa community in Esanland, held at Uromi Town Hall.
This announcement followed the recent passage of a bill by the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), which amends the Kidnapping Prohibition Amendment Law (and Related Matters) 2013. The new legislation prescribed capital punishment for kidnappers and allowed for the demolition and confiscation of properties used in perpetrating the crime.
“I take the issue of insecurity seriously and will not bend the rules but apply them strictly. The new law in the State permits us to demolish their properties and confiscate their lands. We will build vigilante team offices on those lands,” Okpebholo said.
He added, “We will bring kidnappers to the public and execute them to show our seriousness according to the laws already passed by the EDHA. I will not be afraid to sign it.”
Governor Okpebholo also revealed plans to integrate vigilante members into the state civil service. He noted that the days of unpaid, untrained security personnel would soon be over, as his administration would provide training and salaries to properly recruited vigilantes who will work in collaboration with security agencies.
The Governor assured market women, traders, and residents that their safety was a priority, and measures including the fencing of markets, provision of streetlights, and construction of modern abattoirs would be implemented to enhance security across the state.
He further emphasized the need to properly profile non-indigenes, particularly those claiming to be from the North, to ensure public safety and protect the reputation of law-abiding residents.
Okpebholo acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support in maintaining peace in the country, particularly in preventing further unrest following the recent Uromi incident.
Leaders of the Arewa community, including Alhaji Bawa Umar and Alhaji Isah Muhammad, commended the Governor for his proactive approach to security and for managing recent tensions effectively.
Retired military officer, Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe, also urged the Arewa community to establish a database of their members for better accountability and cooperation with security efforts.
The event ended with renewed assurances of collaboration between the state government and all communities to ensure lasting peace and security across Edo State.
