As part of efforts to eradicate the Lakurawas sect in Sokoto and Kebbi States, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has deployed a Special Operations Brigade to intensify Operation FOREST SANITY III (CHASE LAKURAWAS OUT). This strategic move is aimed at consolidating the successes of precursor operations and ensuring lasting peace in the region.
Addressing the troops on 13 December 2024, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, delivered a directive from the Theatre Commander, Major General Oluyinka Soyele. Brigadier Ajose urged the troops to achieve the total destruction of the sect while strictly adhering to rules of engagement and protecting civilian lives and property. He highlighted their specialized training and professionalism, noted that Nigerians are counting on their abilities to secure the nation.
Prior to the deployment, 8 Division troops conducted targeted operations in forested strongholds and enclaves, including Rumji Dutse East, Tsauna, Bauni, Magara Forest, and surrounding villages in Illela, Tangaza, and Binji Local Government Areas. The operations achieved:
The destruction of 22 enemy camps.
Neutralization of several sect members.
Recovery of 4 rifles, 409 rounds of PKT 7.62mm NATO, and 94 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The deployment of the Special Operations Brigade is expected to enhance the mission’s momentum, disrupt the sect’s activities, and restore normalcy in affected communities and the Northwest region as a whole.
