Today marks the third anniversary of the passing of Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, a distinguished leader whose life was marked by service, mentorship, and an undying commitment to the betterment of Oyo State, especially his beloved hometown of Ogbomoso.
Alao-Akala’s political journey began as the Chairman of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area, where he first demonstrated his deep connection with the grassroots. His success in local governance paved the way for his role as the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, before his elevation to the governorship from 2007 to 2011. It was during this period that he earned the political nickname “OYATO,” a term signifying his unique contributions and leadership style, which stood out in both his capacity as deputy and governor.
Alao-Akala was a true son of Ogbomoso, and his love for the town was evident in his efforts to develop it. His instrumental role in the upgrade of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, remains one of his significant legacies, improving healthcare access and elevating the institution’s status within the state.
His leadership extended beyond infrastructure and governance; Alao-Akala was also a mentor, guiding many individuals in the political and public spheres. Among those he mentored was his son, Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, who now represents Ogbomoso North, South, and Orire in the Federal House of Representatives. His son, often called “Omo Oloore,” continues to carry the legacy of his father’s leadership and devotion.
Alao-Akala’s influence reached beyond Ogbomoso and Oyo State. His dedication to public service was widely recognized, with praise from figures such as former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who acknowledged his deep connection with the people and his impactful leadership.
As we reflect on the life of Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, we honor a man who not only contributed to the development of his state but also mentored the next generation of leaders. His legacy remains a beacon of hope, progress, and compassion for all who knew him.
