The Professionals for Good Governance and Social Justice (PGGSJ) has condemned the recent arrest of human rights lawyer and political activist Dele Farotimi, described it as an attack on Nigeria’s democracy and an affront to the rule of law.
In a statement issued by its convener, Dr. Ben Chukwu, the group decried the circumstances surrounding Farotimi’s arrest by the Ekiti State Police Command, alleging intimidation, illegal seizure of phones to suppress evidence, and blatant abuse of power. PGGSJ called for his immediate and unconditional release, urged all Nigerians to resist such injustices.
The group described Farotimi as a relentless advocate for justice and a voice for the voiceless, emphasized his long-standing fight against corruption and injustice.
“Farotimi has consistently championed the rights of poor Nigerians, standing firm against tribal and religious divisions that have been weaponized by the political class,” the statement read.
The group highlighted Farotimi’s history of activism, including his symbolic protests against the detention of fellow activists and his call for radical electoral reforms following the controversial 2023 presidential election. “Farotimi’s unwavering commitment to justice makes him a target for those who fear accountability,” Dr. Chukwu said.
The statement singled out Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola, accused him of filing a petition that allegedly led to Farotimi’s arrest. PGGSJ urged Babalola to withdraw the petition, argued that his actions contradict the principles of justice and human rights.
“Babalola must salvage his reputation by aligning with the cause of justice,” the group declared, warned that history would not be kind to those who enable the suppression of dissent.
PGGSJ called on all professional bodies, human rights organizations, and trade unions to rally behind Farotimi’s cause.
The group urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to mobilize for peaceful protests, warning that failure to release Farotimi could lead to nationwide action.
“We call on Nigerians, especially the youth, to recognize that this is not just about Farotimi. It is about the future of our democracy and the fight against systemic oppression,” Dr. Chukwu stated.
The group also called on the federal government to address the systemic issues highlighted by Farotimi’s activism, including widespread corruption and judicial inefficiencies.
“The arrest of a man who speaks truth to power only underscores the urgent need for electoral and judicial reforms,” the statement read.
PGGSJ concluded with a strong message to the authorities: “If Dele Farotimi is not released immediately, Nigeria will stand still. This is a defining moment for the nation to choose justice over oppression.”
