The Nigeria Police Force has explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, insisting that the action was in line with the law and not politically motivated.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said in a statement on Thursday that Sowore’s arrest followed his alleged role in leading protesters into a restricted area during a demonstration in Abuja on Monday in support of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
“If we proceed to charge others to court while leaving the person who led them to commit the act, that would not be fair,” Hundeyin stated. “In the spirit of fair play and justice, Omoyele Sowore was arrested today.”
He added that Sowore’s detention was temporary and that the police intended to charge him to court without delay.
“He wouldn’t spend up to 24 hours with us. Once we finalize the charges, he will be prosecuted. Our plan is to ensure he goes to court today,” Hundeyin assured.
Sowore, the Publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate, was arrested at the Federal High Court in Abuja shortly after he appeared to show solidarity with Kanu.
The activist had earlier led a protest demanding the IPOB leader’s release, prompting a police investigation into alleged violations of public order and restricted movement regulations.
The police maintained that the move was part of efforts to ensure fairness and accountability in handling all individuals connected to the protest.
