The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that its personnel opened fire on members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at their headquarters in Garki II, Abuja.
In a press release issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, clarified that no such shooting occurred, described the claims as an attempt to incite public unrest and misrepresent the actions of the Command.
According to the statement, the incident occurred in the early hours of March 23, 2026, when the Command received a distress call at about 7:00 a.m. reporting that a large group of approximately 300 individuals had stormed the NURTW headquarters along Sapele Street, Garki II. The group was reportedly armed with dangerous weapons including cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows, and was seen removing items from the premises.
Responding swiftly, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, led a team of officers to the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the group was attempting to enforce a court order without the presence of authorized court officials such as sheriffs.
The situation escalated into a violent confrontation when other NURTW members resisted the action. During the clash, one individual sustained severe machete wounds to the neck and was promptly rescued by police operatives. Several others who suffered varying degrees of injuries were also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The police confirmed the arrest of seven suspects at the scene. They include Sulaiman A. Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Alhaji Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi, and Ibikunle T. Baruwa. The suspects have since been arraigned before Magistrate Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2.
The Command stated that normalcy has been restored in the area and reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order across the Federal Capital Territory.
Residents were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information through designated emergency lines.
