The Niger State Police Command has recovered three AK-47 rifles, six magazines and 104 rounds of ammunition following a motorcycle accident along the Boyi-Sarki/Toll Gate axis, while also arresting a suspected robbery suspect in a separate operation.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the weapons were discovered on February 17, 2026, at about 9:50 p.m. after a patrol team attached to Gawu-Babangida Division received a distress call about a lone motorcycle accident involving two unidentified persons.
The suspects, who were reportedly travelling from Tafa area of Kaduna State toward the Abuja axis, crashed into a road construction diversion barrier near the toll gate.
Police patrol operatives immediately moved to the scene alongside other individuals who had gathered to assist the victims. During a search of a sack recovered from the accident scene, officers discovered three AK-47 rifles, six magazines and 104 rounds of ammunition concealed in a bag belonging to the victims.
One of the accident victims died instantly, while the second victim was allegedly lynched by a mob during attempts to evacuate him to hospital. The bodies were later deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Suleja.
The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, condemned the act of mob justice, described it as counterproductive to ongoing investigations.
He noted that the suspect could have provided vital information to help the police trace the origin of the weapons and determine their intended use. The Commissioner directed the Area Commander in Suleja to commence a comprehensive investigation and ensure the arrest of those involved in the lynching, while the recovered rifles have been subjected to ballistic analysis.
In a separate development, police operatives attached to Kagara Division arrested a suspected robbery suspect and recovered a stolen motorcycle.
The police said the arrest followed a complaint lodged by a victim who reported that he was attacked on February 11, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m. while travelling to Kwanan-Mariga on his motorcycle. The assailants allegedly used sticks to assault him, causing him to fall and sustain serious injuries before making away with the motorcycle.
Following investigations, officers arrested one Umar Mansir, 40, of Kwanan-Mariga, who was reportedly attempting to sell the stolen motorcycle at Baban-Rami. The suspect allegedly confessed to the crime and identified two accomplices — Abdullahi Garba and Danar Ilya who are currently at large.
The stolen motorcycle has been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The Niger State Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating crime and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their hands, emphasizing the importance of allowing law enforcement agencies to carry out lawful investigations.
