The Niger State Police Command has facilitated the signing of a peace accord by political parties and candidates participating in the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for November 1, 2025.
The event, convened by the Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, took place on Monday, October 27, 2025, at the Police Officers’ Mess, Minna. It brought together representatives of political parties under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) led by its State Chairman, Hon. Isah Mohammed Bello Makujeri, as well as the Chairman of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), Engr. Mohammed Jubril Imam, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, Hon. Nma Kolo, security agencies, Area Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers.
In his opening remarks, CP Elleman said the meeting aimed to promote political maturity, responsibility, and collective commitment to peace among all stakeholders. He outlined the terms of the peace accord, stressed that the Police and other security agencies, in collaboration with NSIEC, had made adequate arrangements to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible election across the state.
He cautioned political supporters, especially the youth, against being used to perpetrate violence or disrupt the process, emphasizing that “the duty of the Police is to protect, not intimidate.”
The CP assured stakeholders of the Command’s neutrality, professionalism, and readiness to provide security before, during, and after the polls.
Speaking at the event, NSIEC Chairman Engr. Mohammed Jubril Imam commended the cooperation of political parties and disclosed that a 15-point agenda had been developed to guide the election process, which will produce 25 local government chairmen and 274 councillors across 4,950 polling units in 274 wards. He urged all signatories to take the peace accord seriously, describing it as an “oath of commitment” to peaceful elections.
The IPAC Chairman, Hon. Isah Mohammed Bello Makujeri, lauded NSIEC for giving parties ample time about six months to prepare for the polls and appreciated the support of security agencies. He praised the Police for their conduct during the recent Munya bye-election and expressed confidence that the forthcoming local government elections would be even more peaceful.
Following contributions and suggestions from participants, the Command’s Legal Officer, CSP Jude Thaddeus Akaeze, read out the peace accord, which contained key provisions such as avoiding religious or ethnic incitement, refraining from inflammatory public statements, and promoting tolerance among supporters.
Representatives and candidates from all political parties later signed the accord, pledging to uphold peace and abide by its terms.
In closing, CP Elleman thanked all stakeholders for their cooperation and reaffirmed the Police Command’s commitment to fairness and professionalism in ensuring a credible and hitch-free election.
