Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), through a political approach, despite his recent life sentence by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu emphasized that “all hope is not lost” for Kanu’s freedom. He noted that the conclusion of the court proceedings now allowed for renewed political engagement to address the matter.
The Deputy Speaker expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s willingness to consider appeals from well-meaning Igbo leaders, saying the President “will not be averse” to interventions aimed at resolving the situation through dialogue.
“It is now time to explore political solutions that had been hindered because the matter was before the court,” Kalu said. “But now that the court has finished, it is time to intensify request for the President’s intervention, and we are sure that the President is not averse to it. We are going to get it. All hope is not lost.”
Kalu urged residents of the South East and Nigerians across the country to remain calm, assured that constructive steps are being taken to secure a positive resolution.
