Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a solemn ceremony attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and several dignitaries from across Africa and beyond.
The late President’s remains arrived earlier in the afternoon from London at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, from where they were transported to Daura in a solemn motorcade.
Leading the procession was President Tinubu, joined by Vice President Shettima, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, Prime Minister of Niger Republic Ali Lamine Zeine, former President of Niger Republic Issoufou Mahamadou, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, serving governors, business leaders, and other top officials.
On arrival in Daura, a brief lying-in-state ceremony was held at the late President’s residence. This was followed by the funeral prayer (Salatul Janazah) led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, Chief Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura.
President Tinubu, alongside family members and close associates of the late leader, witnessed the interment at exactly 5:50 p.m.
The burial ceremony was marked with full military honours, including a 21-gun salute and reveille.
A weeklong programme of events in honour of the late President will continue with condolence visits and memorial activities, beginning with a formal visit to the Buhari family by a Presidential Committee later on Tuesday.
