The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered 250 elderly men and women in Edo State through the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), aimed at enhancing the welfare of senior citizens across the country.
The second edition of the program saw beneficiaries, aged 65 and above, receive N200,000 each to support them during the festive season. The First Lady, represented by the Administrator, Office of the First Lady of State, Edesili Anani, explained that the initiative target250 elderly citizens in each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
She added that this year’s grant was increased from N100,000 to N200,000, amounting to a total of N1.9 billion disbursed nationwide. Coordinators across the states, FCT, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) each received N50 million for disbursement.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu also announced that beneficiaries would receive free medical checkups and other essential items, encouraged them to prioritize their health while celebrating the festive season.
Speaking at the event, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, commended the President and the First Lady for their thoughtful gesture, noted its significance in improving the lives of the elderly.
“This initiative reflects the care and commitment of the First Lady to the elderly. It demonstrates a Renewed Hope Agenda that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens,” Governor Okpebholo stated.
He further affirmed that “a new Edo is rising,” with the Renewed Hope Initiative paving the way for a more prosperous future.
Betty Okoebor, the Edo State APC Woman Leader, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for the initiative, described it as a timely intervention for the people of the state.
One of the beneficiaries, 79-year-old Rosemary Elawure from Ovia South West, shared her excitement, saying, “I never expected this grant. I thank the President, his wife, and Governor Okpebholo for making this happen.”
