The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Amended), has extended the deadline for submission of memoranda on the creation of additional states and local government areas (LGAs) across the country.
The extension was contained in a circular signed by the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, on Monday, March 3, 2025. The new deadline is now March 26, 2025, instead of the earlier announced March 5, 2025.
Kalu explained that the extension followed public appeals for additional time to submit proposals, reaffirming the Committee’s commitment to supporting legitimate efforts that align with constitutional provisions.
He reiterated that all submissions must strictly comply with Section 8(1) of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended), which requires that any request for state creation must be backed by at least two-thirds majority of members representing the area demanding the new state in the Senate, House of Representatives, State House of Assembly, and Local Government Councils within the affected area.
The Committee also reminded proponents of additional local governments that Section 8(3) of the Constitution mandates that voting outcomes from State Houses of Assembly and referenda must be forwarded to the National Assembly for further legislative action.
Submissions are to be made in triplicate to the Committee Secretariat at Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, with soft copies sent to [email protected].
Further enquiries are directed to the Clerk of the Committee, Wali Shehu, while only proposals that meet the stipulated guidelines will be considered.
