Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON: A Compassionate and Exemplary Leader

True leadership is often defined not just by policies and pronouncements but by the quiet acts of kindness and unwavering support that happen behind the scenes. Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, embodies this principle.

Speaker Abbas is a leader who deeply values relationships, extending his warmth and care beyond the official corridors of power. He has consistently demonstrated exceptional regard for his predecessors in the Office of the Speaker and other presiding officers, ensuring they remain engaged in the activities of the House. His leadership is not just about the present; it is about preserving institutional memory and fostering unity across different eras of the legislature.

Beyond his official responsibilities, Speaker Abbas makes deliberate efforts to forge personal relationships with each of the other 359 members of the House. He understands that true leadership is built on connection, trust, and mutual respect. Whether through personal outreach, quiet acts of support, or his willingness to listen, he cultivates an atmosphere of camaraderie that strengthens the unity of the 10th Assembly.

His compassion is also evident in his treatment of the families of our departed colleagues. While many of these gestures are done quietly, those of us privileged to witness them can attest to his unwavering support for those left behind. Speaker Abbas does not see these families as mere statistics in the House’s history but as a continuing part of our shared parliamentary journey. He has ongoing support for all the families of our departed colleagues.

This was particularly evident in his response to the passing of the Late Rt. Hon. Adewumi Oriyomi Onanuga. He was not just a colleague to her; he was a true friend and partner in progress. Long before her transition, he was personally involved in matters relating to her healthcare, demonstrating care not just as a leader but as someone who truly valued her.

At her funeral, he led a large delegation of members, visibly moved by the loss of someone who had been both a steadfast ally and a cherished friend. Today, he extended that loyalty by receiving her children in audience, reaffirming his enduring commitment to their well-being.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen leads with empathy, integrity, and an unshakable sense of duty. The 10th Assembly is privileged to have a Speaker whose leadership is not only defined by legislative achievements but also by a rare depth of humanity.
