The Social Advocacy Front (SAF) has expressed strong disappointment over former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s remarks dismissedthe Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a “wasteful” initiative.
In a statement signed by SAF Chairman, Tahir Ibrahim Tahir, and Secretary, Shehu Attah, the group described Obi’s comments as “deeply concerning” and lacking empathy for students benefiting from the programme.
“NELFUND was established to implement the Nigeria Student Loan Scheme, providing interest-free loans for tuition and living expenses to students in public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education,” the statement read. “Repayments begin only after securing employment post-NYSC and are capped at 10% of income, ensuring minimal financial strain on graduates.”
Since its launch in May 2024, NELFUND has disbursed ₦155 billion to over 780,000 students, with about 1.3 million applications nationwide. Students from 262 tertiary institutions have benefited, highlighting the programme’s growing impact.
SAF urged Obi to “desist from politicising a policy intervention that offers a sustainable and inclusive funding pathway for Nigerian students” and called on him to reassess his position.
The advocacy group also highlighted other education sector reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, including the nationwide rollout of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) aimed at bridging skills gaps and boosting employability.
“These initiatives represent bold, innovative, and comprehensive education funding and skills-development reforms of the Renewed Hope Administration. They deserve commendation and constructive engagement, not unwarranted condemnation,” SAF added, reiterating its strong support for NELFUND and other transformative programmes.
