Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has extended a warm invitation to the Historic African Diaspora, encouraging them to see Lagos as their home. This assurance came during his reception of a 14-member African Ancestry delegation, emphasizing the importance of shared heritage in strengthening ties between Nigeria and the African Diaspora.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), for her dedication to engaging the Diaspora community. He also praised Dr. Gina Paige, the leader of the delegation, for her pioneering work in reconnecting people of African descent to their roots through DNA testing.
“Our rich and diverse history is crucial to our identity as Nigerians and Africans,” Sanwo-Olu stated, outlining his vision for Lagos as a hub for cultural exchange.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in her remarks, congratulated Governor Sanwo-Olu for transforming Lagos into an attractive destination for all. She highlighted the success of recent events like “Detty December” and applauded the approval of the permanent Door of Return in Badagry, a project poised to boost tourism.
Dr. Gina Paige, co-founder of African Ancestry, expressed her desire to live in Nigeria and urged the government to grant citizenship to those who trace their roots to the country. Despite challenges, she emphasized the unyielding desire of the African Diaspora to reconnect with their ancestral homeland.
The delegation’s visit marks a significant step in strengthening the bond between Nigeria and the African Diaspora, with Lagos positioned as a key cultural and historical center.
