The Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs on Thursday screened 38 nominees for appointment as Chairman and Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission (FCC).
The exercise, held at the National Assembly, was presided over by the Committee Chairman, Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh (Rivers East), following President Bola Tinubu’s request for the Senate to confirm the nominees. The request was presented during plenary on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, and referred to the committee for further legislative action.
In line with Senate procedures, the nominees underwent a detailed vetting process which included security checks such as Police fingerprint reports, and verification of their asset declarations with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).
The committee also evaluated the competence and preparedness of the nominees to uphold the constitutional principles of federal character in public service appointments and resource distribution.
Among the nominees screened was Hon. (Mrs.) Ayo Hulayat Omidiran from Osun State, who has been nominated to serve as Chairman of the Commission. She appeared alongside 37 others representing the states of the federation and the FCT.
Speaking with journalists after the session, Senator Onyesoh described the screening as smooth and thorough, noting that the committee’s report will be submitted to the Senate in the coming days.
“The committee has diligently carried out its mandate and will submit its report to the Senate for further legislative action,” he said.
Onyesoh stressed the strategic role of the Federal Character Commission in promoting fairness, equity, and inclusiveness across federal institutions, adding that the Senate remain committed to protecting those values.
The committee’s report is expected to be considered by the Senate ahead of the final confirmation of the nominees.
