The Nigerian Senate has marked the midterm anniversary of the 10th National Assembly with a reflection on its legislative milestones and a renewed commitment to critical national reforms, particularly in the electoral and judicial sectors, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, disclosed that the upper chamber introduced a total of 983 bills between June 13, 2023 and June 12, 2025, out of which 108 were passed into law. These include both executive and private-member bills aimed at stabilising Nigeria’s political, economic, and legal systems.
According to Bamidele, the 2024/2025 legislative year alone witnessed 506 bills introduced—a 6% increase from the previous year—and 83 of these were fully enacted into law, representing a 232% jump in legislative output compared to the 25 passed in 2023/2024.

Bamidele particularly highlighted the Student Loan Act, which he said has significantly expanded access to higher education, noting that over 1 million students have already applied. Of these, 563,279 institutional loans and 530,773 upkeep loans have been granted and processed respectively.
He also emphasized the importance of the Tax Reform Bills, stating they will simplify Nigeria’s tax system, eliminate structural inefficiencies, improve investor confidence, and catalyze growth across all sectors.
Looking forward, Bamidele said the Senate will prioritise:
Reform of Nigeria’s electoral laws to ensure credible, transparent, and inclusive elections in 2027.
Review of the 1999 Constitution
Comprehensive judicial reforms, including the appointment, tenure, and welfare of judicial officers.
“When citizens are assured that their votes will count, it enhances participation and strengthens democracy,” he noted. “Similarly, judicial reforms are necessary to ensure justice is delivered transparently and efficiently.”
The Senate also confirmed 331 presidential appointments and resolved 130 petitions during the period under review, reinforcing its oversight and representative roles.
The 10th National Assembly, comprising the Senate and House of Representatives, was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, with Senator Godswill Akpabio elected as Senate President and Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House.
As the Assembly enters its second half, Nigerians are expected to see a more reform-driven legislature committed to strengthening democratic governance and institutional accountability.
