The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has paid heartfelt tributes to Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, and the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (Ogbagba II), described both as unwavering champions of peace, stability, and unity in Nigeria and beyond.
In a statement issued by the Directorate of Media and Public Affairs, Office of the Leader of the Senate, Bamidele praised the lives and legacies of the two national icons, who passed away at the ripe ages of 82 and 91, respectively, on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
According to the Senate Leader, the duo’s demise marked not only a loss to their families and communities but also to Nigeria, West Africa, the African continent, and the global black community.
Reflecting on Buhari’s leadership as Military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, Bamidele described him as an embodiment of discipline, self-control, and integrity, who led with conviction to restore moral order and fight corruption.
Bamidele also recounted Buhari’s political journey in the Fourth Republic from contesting presidential elections under the defunct ANPP, to forming the CPC, and eventually co-founding the APC, which ended Nigeria’s long-standing era of conservative leadership in 2015.
He extended condolences to the late president’s wife, Aisha Buhari, their children, the Daura Emirate Council, the government and people of Katsina State, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
On the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, Bamidele, on behalf of the Senate and its South-West Caucus, condoled the Anikilaya Ruling House, the people of Ijebu Kingdom, and the Ogun State Government.
He described the Awujale as a revered monarch whose reign was marked by inclusiveness, wisdom, and steadfast commitment to the growth and unity of Ijebuland and Nigeria at large.
“Oba Adetona was a rare royal figure who upheld the sanctity of the traditional institution and remained a fearless advocate for good governance under both military and democratic rule,” Bamidele said.
He concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of both leaders and strength for their loved ones and the nation as a whole.
