Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has announced a scholarship programme for 1,000 students in Kano Central and Kano South to pursue degree programmes in ICT-related fields. The initiative, facilitated through the Barau I. Jibrin Foundation (BIJF), aims to enhance access to higher education in the state.
The scholarship beneficiaries will be the pioneer students of seven newly established study centres of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. These centres, set up in Kano Central and South Senatorial Districts, were established in collaboration with the university’s management.
The Special Adviser to the Deputy Senate President on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday. The university was represented during the planning meeting by Prof. Abubakar Sadik Suleiman, Dean of the Faculty of Management Science and a board member of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, alongside Dr. Jamilu Ajiya, the Acting Provost of the College.
Senator Barau, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, had previously facilitated the establishment of four study centres in Gwarzo, Danbatta, Dawakin Tofa, and Gabasawa local government areas, where over 1,000 students are currently enrolled in various degree programmes.
Expanding on this success, he is now setting up additional study centres in Madobi, Kiru, Tudun Wada, Rano, Gaya, Dawakin Kudu, and Minjibir local government areas to extend university education opportunities across Kano’s 44 local government areas.
Speaking on the initiative, Senator Barau, who also serve as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, emphasized the importance of education in national development.
“Education is the bedrock of the development of all nations. I will continue to work towards providing qualitative education to our people across the 44 LGAs,” he stated.
The scholarship programme and establishment of the study centres reinforce Senator Barau’s commitment to improving access to education and equipping Kano youth with the skills needed for the digital age.
