Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Tony Ojukwu Esq. has said that strategic collaboration with relevant agencies remained key to the promotion and protection of human right in Nigeria.
Ojukwu stated this during a courtesy visit to the (NCC) Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta. He said the Commission will achieve more with digitalization and computerization of the NHRC system.
The Executive Secretary lamented that the Commission does not have the capacity to fund most of the activities of the Commission due to inadequate funding. However, he said the Commission will leverages on strategic partnership and collaborations to effectively deliver on the mandate of the Commission.
Responding, the Director of Policy Competition and Economic Analysis Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye said the NCC recognised human rights as fundamental to every human being. Mrs Akinloye who received the human rights delegation on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman stated that the NCC is very passionate at upholding the rights of consumers “it is one of our key mandate to uphold the right and privacy of the consumers” she added.
She stated further that the NCC is set to develop a regulation on data protection, hate speech and other forms of information which could infringe on the rights of others.
The NCC Director of Policy Competition and Economic Analysis said no service provider goes to the market without passing through the NCC, “and we must ensure that Nigerians are not unnecessary oppressed” Akinloye said.
She added that, as a regulator, the NCC played a balancing role by making sure that all the multi-faceted stakeholders like the consumers, operators and the government are satisfied with its services.
