My phone conversation with Dangiwa Umar over Tukur Mamu, by Hassan Gimba

My column of last week with the title “Like Mamu, like Abdulsalami and the billion naira firefighter” drew the attention of Colonel Dangiwa Umar (retd). The respected senior citizen was more particular about the first part because I mentioned him.       In the piece, I pointed out that Tukur Mamu, publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald and an aide to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a popular Islamic cleric, was arrested in September last year and taken to court on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism financing.       He…

Like Mamu, like Abdulsalami and the billion naira firefighter, by Hassan Gimba

In a move normally seen in Hollywood spy thrillers, Tukur Mamu, publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald and an aide to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a popular Islamic cleric, was arrested in September last year at the Cairo International Airport on his way to Saudi Arabia for lesser Hajj, and detained for 24 hours before he was repatriated back to Nigeria. Perhaps Mamu’s arrest was not because of negotiations for the release of the passengers abducted during the attack on a Kaduna-bound train in March 2022. Perhaps. The Department of State Services (DSS)…

Bagauda Kaltho was not a terrorist. By Owei Lakemfa

Mahdi Shehu, one of the supporters of the bloodthirsty Abacha military regime, runs around today in the outfit of a ‘human rights activist’. I don’t have any problem with that; anybody can call himself anything he wants. He trashes the Buhari presidency when he has the opportunity. As a Nigerian citizen, he has a right to his opinion and in any case, I do not hold the Buhari administration in high esteem. Besides, when the Abacha regime was sending innocent Nigerians to early graves, forcing some into exile, looting our…

Train Attack: Gunmen release five additional hostages

The gunmen who attacked a Kaduna-bound train in March and abducted several passengers released five more hostages on Tuesday.   The release of the hostages comes after the terrorists released four of the victims last week Monday.   A newspaper publisher, Tukur Mamu, who had previously negotiated the release of some of the captives, confirmed the release of the five hostages to PREMIUM TIMES.   Mr Mamu identified the released hostages as Mustapha Imam, a professor from Usman Danfodio University Sokoto, Akibu Lawal; Abubakar Rufai; Mukthar Shu’aibu; and Sidi Sharif.…

IZALA IN PERSPECTIVE: BALA LAU, KABIR GOMBE AND HOW NOT TO LEAD THE UMMAH By Tukur Mamu

It is important to emphasise at the beginning of this piece that the idea behind my decision to write on the above subject matter is not to ridicule, embarrass or to unduly criticise anybody, but to admonish all of us to reflect on the conduct of particularly those of us that carry the huge burden of managing the affairs of Islam and Muslims of the Sunni school of thought for the purpose of correcting ourselves before it is too late. I know that the content of this piece may steer…
