Senator representing Jigawa North West in the Nigeria’s Senate, Sen.Babangida Hussain Uba on Wednesday urged the security agencies and road management authorities to be proactive in mitigating the impact of road disaster when it occurred
Moving the motion of urgent National importance on the floor of the Senate about the petrol tanker explosion that killed more than 100 people and left many others with various degrees of burns, Senator Babangida Hussain Uba
said, the incident occured on the 15th October,2024 at the late evening,when a tanker laden with petroleum products heading to Hadejia had an accident and subsequently exploded.
He posited that, “this is one incident too many, as it had happened in Oyo, Lagos and other parts of Nigeria as such the security agencies should always be on top of their game to mitigate the impact.
“Educating the general public about the negative consequences of being around disaster zone when they occur, as such he called on the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and relevant information management system to put in place mechanisms of drawing the public’s attention to danger when disaster occur”.
The issue of rehabilitation of the network of pipelines across the length and breath of the country where petroleum products will be conveyed seamlessly against the situation where it is conveyed each and every hour of the day using the road by NNPCL was postulated by the lawmaker.
Rail rehabilitation and its usage in evacuating products (petroleum) either from the ports or the refineries to the discharging points are some of the measures he said that if fully implemented will stem the tide of loss of life and property through such disaster.
He added that the media also have a role in the sensitization of the populace in the event such disaster occured.
All the points raised in the motion were unanimously adopted by the Senate.
