President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved free nationwide train rides for commuters from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, to ease the financial burden of travel during the festive season.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on Monday at the State House, Abuja, and presided over by President Tinubu.
According to Idris, the initiative reflects the President’s commitment to reducing transportation costs, particularly for vulnerable Nigerians during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“This is consistent with the President’s desire to cushion the effect of transportation costs, especially for the most vulnerable Nigerians,” Idris stated.
The Minister also disclosed that the Federal Executive Council will observe a recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025, during which no council meetings will hold.
The gesture followed similar initiatives introduced last year during the Yuletide and Sallah periods, which were widely praised for their positive impact on Nigerian commuters.
