President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially flagged off the dualization of sections two to four of the Ekpoma-Auchi-Okpella-Okene-Ajaokuta Expressway, a strategic federal road project aimed at enhancing socio-economic activities in Edo and Kogi States.
The President, represented by the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, performed the groundbreaking ceremony in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering durable road infrastructure across the country, ensuring national development.
According to Umahi, the road is a vital economic corridor linking the two states, facilitating trade, transportation, and regional integration.
“This road is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu. It is a signature project that will open up this axis for economic and social development. Roads constructed under this administration will stand the test of time, lasting over 50 years,” he stated.
He commended Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State for his ongoing infrastructure efforts, including the flyover project at Ramat Park in Benin City. He also acknowledged the role of Senator Adams Oshiomhole in advocating for the project.
Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, described the project as a game-changer, stated that it would enhance economic activities and reduce travel time.
“Previous administrations made us believe that Nigerian roads could not last beyond 10 years. Today, under President Tinubu’s leadership, we are witnessing roads designed to last between 50 and 100 years,” Oshiomhole said.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, visibly excited at the ceremony, recalled his past advocacy for the road’s rehabilitation and expressed gratitude to the President for approving the project.
“As someone who resides along this corridor, I understand the people’s suffering. Today, that story is changing, and Edo is witnessing meaningful development,” Okpebholo said.
He urged Edo people to appreciate President Tinubu’s efforts through their electoral choices in the future.
Also present at the event, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, represented by his deputy, Joel Salifu, hailed the project as a symbol of renewed connectivity between the two states, emphasized its economic impact.
The dualized road, expected to feature three lanes, will ease transportation, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, and stimulate industrial and commercial activities in the region. Stakeholders believe the project mark a significant milestone in President Tinubu’s infrastructure drive and will further integrate Edo and Kogi States into Nigeria’s economic landscape.
