President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday declared that Nigeria’s economy has “turned the corner” and assured citizens of brighter days ahead, as he joined dignitaries in Ibadan, Oyo State, for the historic coronation of His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Sen.) Abdul-Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Speaking at the colourful ceremony, President Tinubu said the reforms introduced by his administration over the last two years were beginning to yield results, stressed that the nation was on the path of recovery.
“Today, I am honoured to bring the cheering news that our economy has turned around and there is now light at the end of the tunnel,” the President said, while thanking Nigerians for their patience, resilience and sacrifices in supporting government policies.
The President described Oba Ladoja as a rare leader and a defender of democracy who overcame an illegal impeachment as governor of Oyo State, and prayed for his reign to be long, peaceful and prosperous.
“Happy birthday to you, Kabiyesi. It is a great honour to witness this historic moment. The history we started together with great expectations is now unfolding,” Tinubu said.
Governor Seyi Makinde presented the staff of office and certificate to the new Olubadan, noted that the coronation had ended years of disputes surrounding the Ibadan traditional institution.
“All challenges associated with the Ibadan chieftaincy system are now over and put behind us. The process is now sacrosanct,” the governor said, while commending President Tinubu for honouring the people of Oyo State with his presence.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Ladoja described his ascension as the fulfilment of destiny, reflecting on his journey from Mogaji of the Arusa family in 1992 to the throne of his forefathers.
“I want to sincerely appreciate my brother and friend, President Bola Tinubu, for honouring me and all the sons and daughters of Ibadanland with his visit here today,” the Olubadan said.
The coronation was attended by dignitaries including Governors Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti, Ademola Adeleke of Osun, as well as former Governors Donald Duke, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Ibikunle Amosun, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Gbenga Daniel.
Traditional rulers led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, also graced the ceremony.
President Tinubu was accompanied by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji.
