President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., after a prolonged illness.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said he had spoken with the widow of the late former President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, to convey his heartfelt condolences.
As part of national mourning, President Tinubu has directed that all flags across the country be flown at half-staff in honour of the late leader.
He also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the late President back to Nigeria.
The late Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. He had earlier served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
Further details regarding burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the Presidency.
