President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing him as a courageous servant of God and a symbol of humanity.
Imam Abubakar, who died at the age of 92, gained national and international recognition in 2018 after he sheltered and protected more than 200 Christians during violent communal clashes in Plateau State, an act that saved many lives.
In a condolence message issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late cleric as an extraordinary religious leader whose life embodied faith, courage and an unwavering belief in the sanctity of human life.
“At a time when tribal and religious sentiments threatened to overwhelm reason, Imam Abubakar stood firmly on the side of peace, compassion and conscience,” the President said.
According to Tinubu, the cleric’s decision to protect innocent lives, despite the grave risk to his own safety, was a powerful demonstration of true faith and humanity.
“Mindless of the enormous risk to his own life, he chose humanity over division, love over hatred and embrace over rejection. His heroic act resonates louder than sermons and delivers a timeless message to the world,” the President noted.
The President recalled that Imam Abubakar’s bravery attracted local and international honours in recognition of his commitment to peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony.
He also urged religious and community leaders across the country to emulate the late cleric’s example by promoting tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
President Tinubu prayed that Almighty God grant Imam Abdullahi Abubakar eternal rest and rewards him abundantly for his courage and selfless service to humanity.
