The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a more professional, disciplined and performance-driven Nigeria Police Force as the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA 2026) officially opened in Asaba, Delta State.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented at the ceremony by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa(Rtd) conveyed his goodwill to officers and athletes participating in the Games, describing the event as a vital platform for strengthening operational readiness, unity and professionalism within the Force.
The President, who was unable to attend due to pressing state engagements, reiterated his administration’s unwavering support for a Police Force capable of effectively contributing to national security, stability and the overall progress of the country. He emphasised that policing excellence must extend beyond authority and uniform, stressing that character, competence and conduct remain the defining pillars of public service.
Highlighting the significance of the host city, the President commended Delta State’s sustained investment in sports development, noting that its commitment to grassroots programmes, modern facilities and athlete grooming has positioned it as a leading centre of sporting excellence in Nigeria. He described the selection of Asaba as symbolic, reflecting how purposeful leadership and investment in human capital can translate into national achievements.
According to the President, the theme of this year’s Games, “Beyond the Badge: Excellence in Action,” underscores the higher calling of policing, while the slogan “Discipline, Dignity and Dedication” captures the ethical standards required to sustain professionalism and public trust. He noted that sporting competition mirrors the values essential to effective policing, including resilience, teamwork, preparedness and integrity.
The address further emphasised that sport remains a strategic tool for strengthening institutional cohesion and enhancing mental and physical fitness among security personnel. A physically fit and mentally resilient Police Force, he said, is indispensable to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining national stability.
Reflecting on the historical contribution of the Nigeria Police Force to sports development, the President observed that the Police Games, which evolved from athletics championships introduced in the 1940s, have consistently promoted unity, discipline and community engagement while reinforcing institutional cohesion. He praised police athletes who have excelled on the global stage, including Olympic gold medalist Chioma Ajunwa, whose achievements continue to inspire generations of officers and Nigerians alike.
The President also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for sustaining sports initiatives that promote professionalism, character development and esprit de corps within the Force. He noted that such initiatives align with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which recognised security as the foundation for economic growth, social stability and national confidence.
Urging participants to compete with honour and uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, the President encouraged officers to allow the spirit of discipline, dignity and dedication guide their conduct both on and off the field. He stressed that the same qualities required for sporting excellence are essential for strengthening trust between security institutions and the communities they serve.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s continued support for the Nigeria Police Force, the President assured officers that efforts to equip, motivate and reposition security institutions remain a top priority.
The Minister of Defence subsequently declared the 15th Biennial Police Games officially open on behalf of the President, expressing optimism that the competition would further strengthen unity within the Force while deepening public confidence in policing across Nigeria.
