0 ofPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerian editors to uphold the highest standards of journalism by prioritising verification, balance, and professionalism in their work, stressing that responsible media remains vital to democracy and national cohesion.
Delivering his opening address at the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) Annual Conference held at the State House, Abuja, the President commended the media’s historical role in defending democracy, saying journalists have long been at the forefront of Nigeria’s struggle for justice, freedom, and good governance.
“Verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle, and professional judgment must be your guide,” Tinubu told the editors. “Your aim must never be to tear down, but to help build a better society.”
He noted that in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly through social media, the editorial function has become more critical than ever in protecting truth and strengthening public trust.
While acknowledging the right of the press to hold government accountable, Tinubu urged media practitioners to distinguish constructive criticism from cynicism that could undermine national unity.
“Criticism, when informed and constructive, serves the nation,” he said. “But cynicism that breeds mistrust and despair can weaken the foundations of the society we all seek to improve.”
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reforms aimed at restoring stability and boosting investment, noting that the government’s efforts are beginning to yield results across key sectors.
He, however, emphasised that nation-building goes beyond economic growth, requiring cooperation, trust, and a shared sense of purpose among all sectors including the media.
“The stories we tell ourselves as a nation influence the country we become,” he stated. “Let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair.”
Tinubu commended the Nigerian Guild of Editors for sustaining a tradition of professional reflection and urged editors to continue setting the tone for ethical journalism that strengthens democracy and fosters unity.
