A devastating explosion rocked the Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway on Wednesday evening, leaving multiple casualties and causing extensive damage.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred after a fuel-laden truck lost control and crashed, leading to a massive explosion that engulfed several vehicles in flames. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky as frantic bystanders called for emergency services.
A viral video shared by a witness, identified as General Jhamuha, showed burning vehicles and victims trapped in the inferno while people desperately called for help. “People are burning! Someone should call the fire service and road safety,” he was heard pleading.
Rescue operations were immediately launched as firefighters and emergency responders rushed to the scene to contain the fire and assist victims. However, the intensity of the flames initially prevented rescuers from approaching the burning wreckage.
As of press time, the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, but reports indicate that several people lost their lives, while others sustained severe burns and injuries. The accident also caused significant traffic gridlock along the Abuja-Keffi corridor, leaving motorists stranded for hours.
Authorities, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, first responders continue to work at the site to assess the full extent of the damage and ensure the safety of commuters.
