The Defence Headquarters has disclosed that troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria recorded significant breakthroughs in ongoing military operations across the country between July 10 and 17, 2025. Key among the achievements was the foiling of oil theft activities worth over ₦291 million and the arrest of a total of 143 suspects linked to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, gunrunning, and oil bunkering.
This was revealed today during a press briefing by Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, at Defence Headquarters Abuja, where he provided updates on major operations across all theatres.
In the South-South region, troops of Operation DELTA SAFE uncovered and dismantled several illegal refining sites, recovering over 201,000 litres of stolen crude oil, nearly 30,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and more than 1,700 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK). A total of 42 suspects were arrested in connection with oil theft and other criminal activities. Weapons, explosives, vehicles, motorcycles, and refining equipment were also seized.
Across the North East, under Operation HADIN KAI, troops sustained pressure on Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, eliminating several insurgents while many others surrendered. Eleven collaborators were arrested and seven kidnapped victims rescued. Military intelligence also led to the arrest of a terror logistics supplier and two union transport workers allegedly caught with military uniforms and sensitive items.
In the North West, troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA arrested six terrorists and rescued three kidnap victims in Sokoto and Zamfara States. Three suspected gunrunners were apprehended in Sokoto with nine AK-47 rifles, over 450 rounds of ammunition, and ₦365,600. A notorious kidnap kingpin was also arrested in Bauchi State. Further raids across Katsina, Kebbi, and Niger States resulted in additional arrests and rescues.
In the North Central zone, under Operation SAFE HAVEN and Operation WHIRL STROKE, troops responded to distress calls and carried out targeted operations in Plateau, Kaduna, Benue, and Nasarawa States. Twelve suspects were arrested in Plateau alone, while others were apprehended across Taraba and Kogi States. In one incident, troops intercepted a vehicle with bullet holes, recovered arms, and seized ₦13.7 million in suspected ransom money from two occupants who allegedly attempted to bribe the soldiers.
In the South East, Operation UDO KA troops arrested 14 suspected members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN group, neutralized two others, and rescued several kidnapped victims across Anambra, Abia, Imo, and Enugu States. A tax collector working for the terrorist group was caught with ₦1.5 million in cash extorted from locals.
Major General Kangye also noted that many farming communities in northern Borno and other conflict-prone areas have resumed agricultural activities due to the improved security situation. Troops are actively patrolling farmlands to guarantee the safety of farmers.
Responding to questions on welfare concerns raised on social media by certain soldiers, General Kangye dismissed the claims, clarified that all troops in operational theatres received centrally coordinated allowances and logistics support. He warned against misinformation from individuals facing disciplinary actions or seeking attention through unethical channels.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and restoring peace nationwide, called on citizens and the media to continue supporting security agencies through timely intelligence sharing.
“The Armed Forces remain resolute in defending our country and safeguarding lives and property. With continued public support, we will defeat all threats to national security,” he said.
