Troops of the 37 Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Demonstration Battalion have apprehended three suspected gunrunners and recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition in Kaduna State.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, on Saturday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the suspects—Yakubu Jibril (45), Abubakar Yahaya (45), and Isiya Sani (30) were arrested on Thursday along the Kauya–Old Afaka-Sabon Birni Road in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Acting on credible intelligence, the troops intercepted the suspects while traveling in a black Golf 4 vehicle with registration number ABUJA 385 K7.
A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered nine AK-47 rifles, 389 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) live ammunition, 54 rounds of 5.56 x 45mm (NATO) ammunition, 17 rifle magazines, GSM handsets, other incriminating items, and a cash sum of ₦365,600.
The statement added that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and investigation to unravel the network behind the illicit arms supply to criminal elements in remote areas.
Major General Kangye noted that the successful operation underscored the effectiveness of the Armed Forces in combating insurgency, banditry, and related security threats. He also quoted the Chief of Defence Staff as commending the troops for their swift response and reaffirming the military’s determination to ensure the safety of all Nigerians.
“This resolute action sends a clear message to all criminal elements that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to eradicating threats to national security,” the statement read in part.
