In a major victory against banditry in the Northwest, troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have neutralized 24 bandits, including seven top commanders of the notorious Bello Turji gang, during a week-long operation targeting bandit hideouts.
The operation, carried out by Special Forces of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade and the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Services, took place in Gebe village, Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on January 22, 2025. It also extended to Shinkafi and Isa LGAs, areas known for high levels of bandit activity.
Supported by precision airstrikes from the Air Component, the operation dismantled Turji’s network through intelligence-driven raids and targeted ambushes. High-profile commanders killed include Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon Saniya (alias Yafi Bahaushe). These individuals were central to Turji’s operations, overseeing attacks, logistics, and the movement of arms.
The offensive also led to the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and motorcycles, further crippling the gang’s capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that Bello Turji, now on the run, is seeking refuge in Maradun LGA with injured fighters, signaling his network’s disarray.
Increased military pressure had also forced the surrender of Turji’s associates, including Abu Radde and Umar Black, in Katsina State. These developments indicated a turning point in the fight against banditry in the region.
Military officials emphasized the need for sustained pressure to ensure Turji’s complete downfall. They highlighted the importance of neutralizing collaborators, disrupting supply chains, and leveraging community cooperation to prevent his regrouping.
With the military maintaining its momentum, the reign of terror by Bello Turji and his gang appeared to be nearing its end.
