The Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria has strongly condemned Russia’s recent missile and drone attacks that killed at least 18 civilians, including four children, and damaged the premises of the European Union Delegation in Kyiv.
The condemnation came on Thursday in Abuja during a solemn exhibition hosted for members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), showcasing striking photographs from the war under the theme “Three Years of Resilience: Ukraine in Photograph.”
Speaking virtually from Kyiv, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Ivan Kholostenko, described the August 28 assault as a violation of international law.
“The killing of children is the gravest of crimes, one that requires firm international condemnation and accountability. Russia is a terrorist state, and we call on all countries and international organizations to formally recognize this status. We urge our partners across Africa to intensify pressure on Russia,” he said.
The event opened with a Condolence Register in honour of the victims, followed by a diplomatic dialogue with Nigerian journalists.
Ukraine’s Consul in Nigeria, Mr. Oleksii Samillo, praised Nigeria as a “like-minded nation” while stressing his country’s determination to contribute to global partnerships despite the ongoing war.
“We are open like Nigeria. We are ready like Nigeria. We are developing our country, even as we continue to defend it,” he said.
He also highlighted Ukraine’s deep historical and cultural heritage, tracing its Christian identity back over a millennium and reaffirming its commitment to sovereignty since independence in 1991.
The Chairman of DICAN, Mr. Idehai Frederick, pledged the Nigerian media’s commitment to professionalism in reporting Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts. He also announced plans for a training programme to help journalists identify and counter disinformation.
“What we need is proper, collaborative partnership,” he emphasized. “Together, we can amplify the truth, support development, and build lasting relations.”
The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence for victims of the war, followed by a guided tour of the photo exhibition featuring authentic images, artifacts, and symbols from the frontlines showcasing the resilience and pride of the Ukrainian people as they continue to defend their sovereignty.
