Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed frustration over the inadequate budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Works, called on the Senate Committee on Works and Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s plans to borrow funds for road infrastructure.
During the 2025 budget defence session at the National Assembly on Friday, Umahi highlighted the enormity of the task at hand, revealed that the Ministry inherited 2,064 projects valued at N13 trillion, which now require N18 trillion due to rising costs. He emphasized the need for a robust funding approach to address the nation’s critical road infrastructure needs.
“The current allocation is insufficient to fix Nigerian roads,We must support the President in borrowing the necessary funds to complete these projects. Without this support, the roads cannot be repaired, and the public will suffer from the lack of critical infrastructure.”Umahi stated.
Umahi underscored the economic benefits of improved road infrastructure, citing its potential to spur economic activities and create jobs. He urged lawmakers and the public to understand the importance of borrowing to invest in roads, which he described as a catalyst for economic growth.
“Road infrastructure cannot be adequately addressed through yearly budgets alone. We need a more substantial and strategic financial commitment to make a lasting impact,” Umahi concluded.
The Minister’s appeal highlights the urgent need for collaborative efforts to enhance Nigeria’s road network, crucial for economic development and alleviating poverty.
