Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has assured that justice will be served in the gruesome killing of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
During a condolence visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, in Abuja on Monday, Governor Okpebholo confirmed that 14 suspects arrested in connection with the killings would be taken to Abuja for further interrogation.
A mob had intercepted a vehicle carrying travelers heading to Kano State for Sallah celebrations, ransacked their belongings, and murdered them in cold blood. The victims, who were hunters from Kano State, were on a peaceful journey when the tragic incident occurred last Thursday.
Addressing the Deputy Senate President, Governor Okpebholo described the act as unfortunate and condemnable, assuring that both the state and federal governments are taking decisive actions.
“It is unfortunate that this incident happened in our state. We are here to let you and everyone know that we are not happy. The President is taking this matter seriously, and the Inspector-General of Police has swung into action. The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of CID is handling the case. So far, 14 suspects have been arrested, and they are being transferred to Abuja for further interrogation,” the governor said.
He further stated that the Edo State Government has set up a committee to provide support for the families of the victims.
In his response, Senator Barau commended the governor for his swift response and urged that all those involved in the killings be brought to justice.
“We cannot undo what has been done, but Nigerians want to see that those responsible for this barbaric act are arrested and punished. I am glad that your government is taking steps to assist the families of the victims and ensure justice is served,” Senator Barau stated.
The Deputy Senate President emphasized that bringing the perpetrators to book would serve as a deterrent to others.
“This incident does not reflect the relationship that people from other parts of the country have enjoyed with Edo residents for centuries. I trust that under your leadership, such acts will not happen again,” he added.
Governor Okpebholo is also scheduled to meet with the Kano State Governor as part of efforts to address concerns surrounding the tragic incident.
