The Founder of Diaspora District in the United States, Manal Al-Ansi, Esq., has called for the formal adoption of July 25 as Global Diaspora Day, a move she said will strengthen international unity and deepen engagement among Diaspora communities across the world.
Al-Ansi made the proposal during a strategic meeting with the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commisswion (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Lagos.
She commended Nigeria for its leadership in institutionalizing the Annual National Diaspora Day on July 25 and noted that elevating the date to global recognition would significantly enhance collaboration, cultural identity, and belonging among Diaspora populations worldwide.
According to her, “A unified Global Diaspora Day will allow cities and countries across the world to align their engagements, creating a sense of home and connection for Diaspora communities, regardless of their cultural backgrounds.”
Responding, Dabiri-Erewa expressed NiDCOM’s full support for the initiative, describing it as timely and globally relevant.
“We are ready to work with you and partner with you to champion this. Recognizing July 25 as Global Diaspora Day will be a win-win for Diaspora communities everywhere,” she said.
The NiDCOM boss also highlighted Nigeria’s cultural reconnection efforts through the Badagry Door of Return Festival, held every October, adding that the event provided an emotional, historical experience for Africans in the Diaspora.
“We will be glad to work with you in making this initiative a reality. Thank you for championing this cause,” she added.
