The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has urged the Federal Government to ensure transparency, accountability, and proper deployment of tax revenues to infrastructure as part of President Bola Tinubu’s sweeping tax reforms.
She made the call at the inaugural Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture organised by the House of Representatives Press Corps in Abuja, themed “Navigating Tax Reforms in Nigeria: Insights on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Policies.” The lecture was delivered by former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the National Credit Guarantee Company Ltd., Yakubu Dogara.
Ike commended the administration’s bold steps to modernize Nigeria’s fiscal system, broaden the tax base, and reduce dependence on oil revenues. She, however, stressed that the true test of the reforms lies in how well revenues are used to improve infrastructure and the quality of life for citizens.
“The media must provide accurate, unbiased information and foster dialogue to build trust in these reforms. Transparency and accountability should guide every stage of implementation,” Ike said, urging collaboration among government, lawmakers, civil society, and the media.
Press Corps Chairman, Gboyega Onadiran, noted that taxation has become one of Nigeria’s most contentious issues, while Organising Committee Chairman, Philip Nyiam, said the lecture was designed to demystify the Tinubu administration’s tax agenda and enrich national discourse.
The organisers added that the choice of Yakubu Dogara as the guest lecturer was deliberate, citing his legislative record and wealth of experience.
