The World Customs Organization (WCO), in partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has concluded a five-day intensive workshop on Friday, December 6, 2024, aimed at enhancing border security and trade operations through advanced data-driven tools.
The workshop, titled “n-Ceen”, was hosted at the Trade Modernisation Project Office in Abuja and focused on equipping customs officers with innovative skills in data gathering and analysis. This initiative is part of efforts to bolster national security and improve enforcement strategies.
In her speech,the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs for ICT/Modernisation, DCG Kikelomo Adeola, underscored the strategic importance of the training during the closing ceremony.
“This collaboration with the WCO demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders. Effective border management cannot be achieved in isolation; skilled personnel and robust partnerships are crucial,” she stated.
DCG Adeola further explained that the training provided officers with cutting-edge tools to enhance their capacity to protect lives and property. She also noted that these skills would enable proactive interventions in high-risk areas, reducing potential dangers, including mob actions against customs officers.
Participants were selected from key departments, including enforcement, intelligence, ICT, and investigations, ensuring the widespread application of the knowledge gained.
Jean Bigirimana, a WCO facilitator from Burundi, commended the NCS for adopting advanced technology in its border security initiatives.
“The n-Ceen application allows Customs administrations to collect, harmonize, and analyze data to identify and target high-risk cases effectively.
“This workshop empowered officers with the necessary skills to utilize the tool’s features, enhancing their ability to make informed decisions in their operations.”Bigirimana explained.
