As he marked his second year in office, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared that his administration deliberately chose the path of difficult reforms and national sacrifice over temporary shortcuts, in order to rescue Nigeria from the brink of collapse.
Speaking at the State House during a national broadcast commemorating the second anniversary of his administration, President Tinubu emphasized that the economic and fiscal policies introduced since May 29, 2023, were not only necessary but crucial to laying the foundation for a more sustainable future for Nigeria.
“We chose to confront longstanding challenges head-on, not because it was easy or popular, but because it was right,Nigeria was in a dire situation. To save it, we had to act boldly and without delay.”Tinubu stated.
Highlighting the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market, the President described the reforms as painful yet unavoidable measures taken to halt economic decline, curb corruption, and reposition the nation’s economy for growth and equity.
He said his government was aware of the burden these reforms placed on ordinary Nigerians but assured that the steps were yielding results, as shown in improving macroeconomic indicators and increased global investor confidence.
Tinubu also unveiled a new phase of targeted interventions to cushion the effects of the reforms, including expanded social investment programs, food security initiatives, and job creation schemes for youths.
“We are not blind to the difficulties Nigerians face. But I assure you, these pains are not in vain. They are the birth pangs of a new and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
Marking two years since his inauguration on May 29, 2023, the President called on Nigerians to remain steadfast and patriotic, saying the nation is now on a firmer path to recovery and inclusive development.
“Let us walk together through this tunnel of sacrifice toward the light of national renewal. I will not relent. I will not look back,” he declared.
The President’s address was widely viewed as a reaffirmation of his government’s commitment to economic reform, integrity in governance, and the long-term vision of restoring Nigeria’s strength and pride.
