Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described Nigerian workers as the “indomitable engine” propelling the country towards economic growth and national prosperity, even in the face of hardship and minimal compensation.
In a statement issued by his media office in Abuja to mark the 2025 International Workers’ Day, Atiku paid glowing tribute to the resilience, sacrifice, and patriotism of the Nigerian workforce, noting that their contributions remain the heartbeat of national development.
According to the former Vice President, the welfare of workers must be placed at the forefront of national discourse by both the government and the private sector, if the country is to attain meaningful progress.
“The condition of the workforce is a mirror reflecting the health and vitality of a nation’s economy an undeniable barometer of socio-economic well-being,” Atiku stated.
He lamented what he called the federal government’s failure to introduce meaningful palliatives for workers amidst prevailing economic challenges, stressing that the continued neglect of labour welfare amounts to a betrayal of the workers’ steadfast commitment to nation-building.
He said “In the face of relentless hardship and meagre compensation, Nigerian workers have continued to bear the burdens of our economic aspirations with silent heroism. Yet, it is disheartening that those entrusted with the reins of policy and governance have failed to reciprocate this steadfast commitment with tangible acts of support and justice.”
Atiku further urged labour union leaders to remain steadfast in their demand for good governance, describing their advocacy as a crucial source of hope for the common Nigerian. He emphasized that their voices must consistently champion transparency, accountability, and social justice.
He also highlighted that Workers’ Day celebrations should serve as a reminder of the value of increased productivity, patriotism, and respect for labour, urging all levels of government to zealously protect workers’ rights and privileges.
“The labour force is the soul of our nation. It is both the face and the force of the people. It is thus imperative that governments and employers alike erect unyielding safeguards to protect the dignity, benefits, and entitlements that justly belong to the worker,” he added.
Atiku concluded by calling on policymakers to draw inspiration from the theme of this year’s celebration, “Social Justice and Decent Work. Safety and Health of Workers,” and recognize workers as equal partners in the quest for national development.
