As the teachers across the globe celebrate World Teachers Day, the Oyo State Speaker, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin has described those in the teaching profession as the nation builders who should be celebrated and appreciated at all times.
Hon Ogundoyin in a release to mark the 2020 World Teachers Day congratulated teachers in Nigeria and those in Oyo State on the occasion of the celebration which was launched in 1994 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.
According to the Oyo Speaker, every successful person has gone through the tutelage of one teacher or the other either formally or informally, hence taking one day every year to say “thank you” to our teachers is encouraging and necessary.
On the theme of the 2020 World Teachers Day which is “Young Teachers : the future of the Profession”, Hon Ogundoyin noted that young, vibrant and intelligent Nigerians who are just joining the teaching profession should see the job of educating and moulding lives as one of the most honorable things to do .
“We recognize the critical roles teachers play in our lives. We know our teachers deserve to be given royal treatment at all times hence the need to continue to celebrate and honor them. They are the unsung heroes whose impacts go beyond the classroom. It is a profession that requires patience, dedication and sacrifice hence people say their reward is in heaven. I believe we should strive to reward them here on Earth. Remember the saying if you can write your name, thank your teacher if not then find a teacher. I want to specially thank all our teachers for preparing and training us to become responsible citizens and I pray to God to make your own children too successful in all their undertakings. Unfortunately, many people now run away from the teaching profession because of poor remuneration. This is rather unfortunate. I think Government at all levels should look at ways of upgrading the teaching profession to enhance efficiency, professionalism and dedication. ” He said.
The Oyo State Speaker explained that because of the importance of the teaching profession , the state government was about to complete the recruitment process for teachers which is meant to address the shortage in the number of teachers in secondary schools across the state.
He urged teachers to develop strong passion for the job adding that teaching remains the bedrock for all professions.
While appealing to those teachers who have given the profession a bad name to have a rethink as the World celebrates Teachers Day, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin assured that the Oyo State Government will continue to give priority to the welfare of teachers.
