The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has said the 10th National Assembly has been extraordinarily proactive and productive since its inauguration in June 2023, recording unprecedented legislative output in its first two years.
Speaker Abbas made the disclosure on Monday during the inaugural Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House, held in Abuja. The event, which brought together top government functionaries, development partners, civil society organisations, and members of the diplomatic corps, was organised by the Office of the Speaker in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), the National Assembly Library Trust Fund (NALTF), and UK International Development.
“In terms of legislative output, this House has been extraordinarily proactive and productive,We have introduced a record number of bills and a volume of legislative proposals that is unprecedented at this stage of any Assembly”Speaker Abbas stated.
The Speaker emphasized that beyond the number of bills and motions, their quality and relevance to national needs stand out, noted that several critical bills passed by the House have already received presidential assent.
According to him, the dialogue was part of the House’s commitment to openness and accountability, and a precursor to the forthcoming Open NASS Week, which will provide Nigerians with the opportunity to scrutinise the Assembly’s activities and track its progress.
“When the 10th House was inaugurated, Nigeria faced serious challenges, including economic hardship, development deficits, and insecurity.
“We recognised that extraordinary times required an extraordinary legislative response.”he said.
He highlighted that the Legislative Agenda was developed through extensive consultations with stakeholders across government, civil society, and development partners, and is aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The agenda, according to him, spans eight priority areas including good governance, national security, economic revitalisation, legal reforms, social development, open parliament, foreign policy, and environmental sustainability.
Speaker Abbas also revealed that implementation mechanisms such as key performance indicators, dedicated monitoring committees, and regular reporting systems were put in place to ensure accountability and tangible outcomes.
“We backed our plan with clear strategies. Every committee integrated the agenda into its work plan, and members were required to maintain active constituency offices and regularly engage their constituents,” he added.
He concluded by reaffirming the House’s commitment to a citizen-driven legislature, saying: “In every major endeavour, we have actively sought the people’s voice.”
