The preliminaries for the 2025 edition of the Nduka Obaigbena National Secondary Schools Essay Competition (NOSSEC) will hold from Tuesday, July 1st to Sunday, July 14th, 2025. The competition will culminate in a grand prize-giving ceremony at the prestigious Government College Ughelli, Delta State.
Organised by the Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER), the annual event is aimed at nurturing excellence in writing among Nigerian secondary school students. It places a strong emphasis on creative writing, critical thinking, rigorous research, and a commitment to truth pillars of responsible journalism.
In a statement jointly signed by Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, Chairman, Board of Trustees, CASER; Frank Tietie, Esq., Executive Director of CASER; and Michael Akoreh, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, the competition is described as a timely intervention in promoting integrity, clarity, and ethical communication among young Nigerians in an era of misinformation and online abuse.
The competition is held in honour of media mogul and Chairman of the ThisDay/ARISE Group, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, CON, whose birthday coincides with the final day of the competition, July 14th.
CASER described Obaigbena as “a trailblazer whose remarkable legacy in journalism and broadcasting continues to inspire generations across Africa.”
