The Headquarters of 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2 Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY), on Thursday hosted a colourful send-off ceremony in honour of the outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division, and Commander Sector 2 OPFY, Major General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose.
The ceremony, held at the Eagle Officers’ Mess, Giginya Barracks, Sokoto, also celebrated other officers who were recently posted out of the Division.
Speaking at the event, Major General Ajose expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the 10th GOC of the Division, described the role as one of the highest honours of his military career. He commended officers and soldiers for their loyalty, professionalism, discipline and resilience, noting that their collective commitment enabled the Division to overcome operational challenges and successfully deliver on its mandate.
Ajose expressed confidence in the leadership and fighting spirit of the Division, urged personnel to remain united and steadfast in upholding the core values and traditions of the Nigerian Army. He said he was leaving the command with immense pride in the achievements recorded during his tenure.
Earlier, the Commander, 8 Division Garrison, Brigadier General Abdulmalik Mohammed, described Major General Ajose as an exceptional leader, mentor and father figure. He said since assuming command in July 2024, the outgoing GOC introduced a proactive and forward-looking leadership style that strengthened operational effectiveness and morale within the Division.
According to him, Major General Ajose consistently anticipated challenges and strategically positioned the Division to remain ahead in the execution of its responsibilities. He added that the GOC’s legacy would endure beyond infrastructure upgrades and improved operational readiness, serving as a benchmark for future leaders.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Sokoto State Governor, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State, and the Director of the Department of State Services in the state. Members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Sokoto Branch, and other distinguished guests were also in attendance.
Highlights of the ceremony included cultural dance performances reflecting the region’s heritage, a grand dinner, presentation of certificates of service and gifts, as well as group photographs to commemorate the occasion.
