The Nigerian Armed Forces on Thursday witnessed a significant leadership transition as the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa , officially handed over to his successor, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, during a colourful ceremony held at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.
General Musa, who retired after 39 years of distinguished military service, described his tenure as “challenging but fulfilling,” while expressing profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the trust reposed in him.
“We faced a complex and dynamic security environment, but we confronted it with unwavering resolve and a shared vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
Reflecting on his stewardship, General Musa said his administration strengthened joint operations, inter-agency collaboration, and personnel welfare, all of which improved operational efficiency and troop morale.
He praised the gallantry of troops who “pushed back the frontiers of terror, liberated communities, and restored hope,” while honouring fallen heroes and wounded warriors.
The outgoing CDS also lauded the media as “vital allies in the fight for truth and national morale,” commended journalists for professionalism and commitment to accurate reporting.
Turning to his successor, General Musa described Lt Gen Oluyede as “a distinguished officer of strategic insight and deep dedication,” urged officers and men to give him full support.
“I hand over the reins of leadership with confidence that the Armed Forces will continue to soar under his command,” he stated, adding, “The journey continues; the mission endures; the duty never ends.”
The event, graced by senior officers and dignitaries, ended with a ceremonial parade, military honours, and a final salute as General Musa bowed out to a standing ovation.
In his inaugural address, the new CDS, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, described his tenure as “a period marked by courage, clarity, and commitment to a professional and adaptive Armed Forces.”
He pledged to lead with professionalism, discipline, innovation, and accountability, emphasized the need to tackle emerging security threats including terrorism, banditry, and cybercrime.
“We will consolidate the gains of past leadership, strengthen synergy among the services, and continue to prioritise the welfare and capacity building of our troops,” Oluyede assured.
Reaffirming his loyalty to Nigeria and the Commander-in-Chief, the new Defence Chief vowed to uphold the proud traditions of the military and advance the cause of peace, security, and national unity.
