Corps members nationwide have expressed gratitude to Federal Government on the fulfillment of the earlier promise to increase their allowance in line with the new national minimum wage. Reports across the States and FCT revealed that Corps Members have been receiving alert of ₦33,000, being the new allowance recently approved for them by the Government.
The Director General of NYSC, Brig. Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, recently while interacting with Corps Members in Bauchi State explained that contrary to the various amounts being circulated on the social media, the sum of Thirty Three Thousand Naira had been approved by the Federal Government as the new Corps allowance.
A cross section of Corps Members confirmed the receipt of the new allowance and commended the DG NYSC and the Government for keeping faith with their promise to Corps Members.
According to Corps Member Aisha Isa Sakpe (FC/19A/0093) in Abuja, “I am excited to receive the new allowance as promised by the DG. I actually lost hope due to delay in the payment. This gesture is indeed a motivation to render more selfless service to the nation”.
Another Corps Member; Onogberie Efe Kenu, (FC/19A/3865) also expressed her joy stating that, “I am happy with this development! As a 2019 Batch “A” Corps Member who is about to pass out of the Scheme, I was not actually expecting that our set would be considered for payment. I am really happy”.
From Bayelsa State, Benjamin Ugochukwu, (BY/19B/1351) who is currently serving in Sagbama LGA also stated that “I am very happy, even though I am yet to receive the new allowance. The new allowance would adequately cater for my needs here in Bayelsa. I am certain, I would not require any support from my parents in Lagos”.
In Zaria, Kaduna State, Ummi Kaltum Ali (KD/19C/3768) expressed optimism that the new allowance would enable her to register and actively participate in the post camp Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme in Fashion and Design.
Other Corps Members across the country took to the social media platforms to appreciate the DG NYSC and Federal Government.
According to Nwaguru John on the NYSC official Facebook page, “I thank Almighty God to have been given the privilege to serve my country under your gallant and fatherly administration”.
The NYSC Scheme appreciated Government’s continued support for the Scheme and wishes to use this medium to congratulate Corps Members on the increase in their allowance while calling on them to reciprocate Government’s gesture by redoubling their commitment towards selfless service to the nation.
This gesture, no doubt, demonstrated Government’s acknowledgement and determination to continue to appreciate the invaluable contributions of Corps Members to national development.
It would be recalled that Corps Members’ allowance was last reviewed by the Government in 2011.
